Why Braces?

Why Braces? A beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. After your braces come off, you'll feel much more confident and self-assured. An additional benefit of braces is achieving a better aligned bite. A misaligned bite can cause uneven wear on teeth that develops over time. Less wear on your teeth will guarantee you a greater chance of keeping your teeth strong and healthy for the duration of your lifetime.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic appliances are made of ceramic, metal or plastic. They may be brackets that are bonded to the teeth or they may be removable. An orthodontic appliance places a constant, mild force in a carefully controlled direction. This force allows the orthodontic appliance to slowly move teeth to an ideal and corrected position. Technology has come a long way in terms of orthodontic care. The days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth are gone! Now you can often choose brackets that are clear, metallic, or even gold. Often times you can even select the color of the ties that hold the wire into brackets. Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be, and the most modern materials move teeth quicker with less discomfort to patients.

Duration of Treatment

On average, the length of time in treatment ranges from one to three years, with the average time being around eighteen months. Length of treatment time depends on the growth of the patient's mouth and face, and the severity of the case. Patients grow at various rates and will respond differently to orthodontic treatment.. The patient's diligent use of any prescribed headgear or rubber bands plays an important role in achieving the most efficient treatment in the quickest time possible. Early or interceptive treatment procedures may take as few as six months to eight months.
