Orthodontic FAQ

Define orthodontics?

Orthodontic FAQ Orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry that concentrates on the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of dental and facial abnormalities.

Who is the orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a specialist who has received two to three years of supplementary instruction and experience beyond dental school. The orthodontist has the ability to align teeth, correct misaligned jaws, and improve the function and overall appearance of your smile.

What is the ideal age to have an orthodontic consultation?

Any age can be a great age to visit the orthodontist, if you wish to improve the appearance and function of your smile. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children initially visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, orthodontic care is not solely for children and teens. Approximately one in every five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Whether you're seeking to learn more about treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to consult with an orthodontist.

How to properly brush and care for teeth while wearing orthodontic appliances?

  • ALWAYS brush your teeth at least two times per day for a minimum of 3-4 minutes.
  • Use toothpaste that contains fluoride, and ask your orthodontist or general dentist if you would benefit from using a fluoride rinse. Fluoride helps prevent cavities!
  • If your retainer is not in your mouth, then keep it safe in your retainer case so it doesn’t get lost or broken.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of your retainer by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and water. You may also soak it in denture cleaner for a deeper clean. Avoid cleaning your retainer with hot water as it can warp the plastic.
  • While undergoing orthodontic treatment, try to avoid foods that are high in sugar (sugar can increase the risk of cavities).
  • Avoid foods that could possibly get stuck in your braces (example: chewing gum with sugar, caramels, gummy bears), hard foods (nuts, ice cubes, hard candy) or any (corn on the cob, taffy, whole apples, etc.).
  • It is strongly recommended that you continue to have your teeth professionally cleaned at the dentist every six months.

What are orthodontic braces?

Your orthodontist will use braces to help correct and improve the appearance and function of your smile. Rollins & Petersen Orthodontics offers a variety of appliances to choose from. There are many different types and styles of braces. Some common options include:

  • Ceramic “Clear” braces
  • Invisalign Trays
  • Traditional metal braces
  • Gold braces
  • Self-ligating braces

If I decide to go through orthodontic treatment, how long do I have to wear braces?

The length of time it will take to complete treatment depends on the severity of the problem. Patients respond variously to different types of treatment. It may take only 16 months to complete treatment in one patient, but may take 24 months to complete the same treatment in a different patient. The length of treatment time fluctuates on how much work is needed to be completed and how your body reacts to the orthodontic appliance.

Do braces hurt?

You may experience a minor amount of discomfort for the first few days of wearing braces and after each visit (every 6 weeks). Your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth take time to adjust to your new braces.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Yes! We strongly recommend and encourage that our patients continue to visit their dentist regularly. Sometime while wearing braces, food can get caught in places that your toothbrush has a hard time reaching. Bacteria build up often leads to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your general dentist and hygienist will work to keep your teeth clean and healthy while wearing orthodontic braces.

Do orthodontic braces interfere with sports, playing an instrument, or singing?

When you first have your braces places, playing and instrument or a contact sport may need some adjustment. Wearing braces will not stop you from participating in these fun activities. A protective mouth guard is recommended when playing a contact sport.
